Finding Answers and Relief

What Is Endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, often on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, bladder, bowel, or pelvic walls. Each month, this tissue responds to hormonal changes, causing inflammation, scarring, and often severe pain. It is a common condition, affecting around 1 in 10 women, yet it is frequently under-diagnosed.

Common Symptoms of Endometriosis

  • Severe period pain that doesn't improve with standard pain relief

  • Pain during or after sex

  • Pain with bowel movements or urination, especially during periods

  • Chronic pelvic pain between periods

  • Difficulty falling pregnant (infertility)

  • Heavy or irregular bleeding

  • Bloating and fatigue

Symptoms can vary widely — some women with significant disease have little pain, while others with minor disease experience severe symptoms.

Diagnosing Endometriosis

Endometriosis cannot always be diagnosed with scans or blood tests alone.

Dr. Tourani will begin with:

  • A detailed history of your symptoms

  • A pelvic examination

  • Pelvic ultrasound (specialised scans may be needed)

  • In some cases, minimally invasive laparoscopy (keyhole surgery) is recommended for a definitive diagnosis and treatment.

Management Options

There is no one-size-fits-all approach — Dr. Tourani tailors management to your individual situation, which may include:

Medical management

Hormonal therapies (such as contraceptives or hormone modulators) to reduce the growth and activity of endometriosis tissue.

If needed, Dr. Tourani specialises in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery to remove or ablate endometriosis tissue while preserving fertility and minimising damage to healthy organs.
