Colposcopy and Abnormal Pap Smears

An abnormal Pap smear can be worrying, but it’s important to remember that it does not mean you have cancer.
It simply means that some changes were found in the cells of your cervix, and further assessment is needed.

What Happens if My Pap Smear is Abnormal?

If your test shows HPV infection or abnormal cells, you may be referred for a colposcopy. This is a simple, low-risk procedure that allows Dr. Tourani to examine the cervix more closely and determine if any treatment is needed.

What is a Cervical Screening Test (Pap Smear)?

A Pap smear (called a Cervical Screening Test in Australia) checks for the presence of HPV (human papilloma virus) and early changes in cervical cells that could develop into cancer if left untreated. Thanks to regular screening, cervical cancer is now rare — and early changes can usually be treated quickly and safely.

What is a Colposcopy?

A colposcopy is similar to having a Pap smear, but with a closer view.
 During the procedure:

  • A special microscope (colposcope) is used to magnify the cervix.

  • A solution is applied to highlight any abnormal areas.

  • If needed, a small biopsy (tiny sample of tissue) may be taken for further testing.

It is generally well-tolerated and takes only about 10–20 minutes.

Common Reasons for a Colposcopy

  • Positive HPV test

  • Abnormal Pap smear results

  • Unexplained bleeding after intercourse

  • Visible changes to the cervix during examination

After colposcopy Affie will recommend to not have anything vaginally for 3-5 days including swimming, bath tub, Tampons or intercourse. You may have some discharge because of liquid dressing that Affie is using for colposcopy.

Will I Need Treatment After Colposcopy?

In many cases, no further treatment is needed — only careful monitoring. If treatment is needed, options may include:

  • Excisional procedures (such as LLETZ/LEEP) to remove abnormal tissue

  • Laser ablation

Dr. Tourani will discuss all findings with you in detail and guide you through the safest, most effective options.

Unfortunately, there is no specific medication to eliminate HPV (Human Papillomavirus). However, Dr Tourani recommends supporting your immune system through healthy lifestyle choices — including regular exercise, adequate sleep, a balanced diet, multivitamins, and probiotics — to help your body naturally clear the virus.

Your Comfort Comes First
