Point of Care Breast Ultrasound at Consultation
A unique aspect of Dr Tourani’s practice is the use of surgeon-performed, point-of-care breast ultrasound during selected consultations. This allows immediate assessment of breast concerns, helping to reduce delays and streamline patient care within a single visit.
Dr Tourani is formally certified by the Australian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) to perform diagnostic and interventional breast ultrasound. This enables him to assess non-palpable breast lesions, perform ultrasound-guided biopsies when indicated, and evaluate breast implant integrity directly in the clinic, facilitating timely diagnosis and informed planning.
Dr Tourani believes that ultrasound should be an extension of the clinical examination:
“Surgeons should regularly use ultrasound as an extension of their hands when examining patients, particularly as more breast lesions are non-palpable. Being able to visualise the exact location and size of a lesion during the consultation allows confident surgical planning and meaningful shared decision-making with patients before proceeding to surgery.”
